Written for beginners to fill a void in available treatises on marbling at the time. A note on the specimens at the end states that Thrift varied the samples used, "and so specific details are impractical." Each copy, therefore, is in some way unique given the differing complements of paper samples. With an ALS by the author's wife loosely inserted, 28 January 1950, to Laura Young: "My husband Tim Thrift passed away Apr-12-1947. I still have a very few of his M.M in M.P. left. Will be pleased to send you one – at $5.00 the regular price he received – it's a practical treatise on marbling and there is a big field for that."
