New York: Violet Press, 1977. 11 x 11 inches. 72 duotone illustrations. Original pink printed wrappers, lettered on front cover, the rear cover with self-portrait by Rexroth. First edition. Printed by Thomas Todd Company; designed by Katy Homans. With brief texts by Rexroth and Mark Power along with a poetic excerpt by Wayne Dodd. In the introduction to the 2017 reprint, Rexroth wrote "The series IOWA has now occupied a total of six years of my life. In retrospect, it does seem rather odd to have spent so long using a plastic toy camera such as the Diana. But somehow the excitement continued and continued, and I followed right along until one day in Ironton, Ohio, when I realized I was no longer interested. The book is conceived of as a kind of psychic journey from one emotional mood to the next – a maturation process. It all happens in a very exotic place. It is the Midwest, that strange land where déjà vu is an everyday occurrence..." This self-published work soon became a classic of fine art photography.
