First edition. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author beneath the printed dedication "To Eric Gillett": "from his old and affectionate friend Clifford Bax." Bax was a prolific playwright, poet, editor, lyricist, translator and essayist, who had a penchant for the esoteric as well, even playing chess with Aleister Crowley for a time. Bax was a founder (1919-1926) of the Phoenix Society, whose aim was to revive important Elizabethan and Restoration drama, and, in 1929, was elected chairman of the Incorporated Stage Society. His friend Eric Gillett was an editor, publisher, writer and broadcaster.
