First edition of this collection of essays. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author to his cousin William Hazlitt on the half-title: "W. Hazlitt Esq. with his cousin's affect. regards April 4 1884." The printed dedication reads in part: "I hope that you will not consider that I use too great a freedom in doing myself the honour of associating your name with my collected labours." The lawyer William Hazlitt (1811-1893) was the son of the critic of the same name.
