Fishing with the Fly
Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin & Co, 1886. 8vo (7 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches). Fifteen chromolithograph plates by M. Bradley & Co., and one map. Publisher's green cloth, front cover blocked in black with a fishing scene, lettered in gilt, gilt-and black-lettered and decorated on spine, top edges gilt. Hinges tender but strong, ends of spine and corners lightly frayed, light toning to sheets, plates fresh and bright. Item #408868
With a nicely cast gift inscription on front flyleaf to "John E. Howland / July 12, 1887 / From a fly fisherman who is not always as 'fly' as he might be." The first edition was published by Orvis in 1883, in effectively a privately-printed edition; this Houghton, Mifflin trade edition of 1886 brought the fine texts and plates to a larger audience.
