FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the engraved title and third and fourth endpapers headed "Poetry and the Drama" and "School Books". BAL 8781. A good copy of Holmes's famous compendium of aphorisms ("Sin has many tools, but a lie is a handle which fits them all"), and light verse. He first wrote these for the New England Magazine in 1831 and 1832, then published them in this book form in 1858.
