First American edition of this Quaker tract, originally published in London in 1648. The Society of Friends of Philadelphia requested Overseers Anthony Benezet and John Reynell to arrange with pro-Quaker Franklin the reprinting of this work in an edition of 4,000 copies, to be distributed at the same time as John Rutty's The Liberty of the Spirit, also published by Franklin and Hall.
