Helsinki: Artek, 1966. 27 x 21 cm. Nine yellow-paper section dividers. 79 leaves, some printed on rectos only, richly illustrating Aalto designs. Original red wrappers, white comb binding. Provenance: Amos Melamede (signature on inner front wrapper, his presumed notations of dimensions of pieces on several leaves), Swedish-born founder of the Acoustiguide Corporation in Manhattan, the company that pioneered the use of taped commentaries for patrons of museums. A well-studied copy, the comb spine partly perished, the wrappers a bit worn, and internally suffering from adhesions near the extreme lower gutter that restrict fully opening many pages. Nevertheless, a scarce original catalog from Artek, a rich and important resource for studying Aalto's designs, most likely distributed to retailers, and therefore its ephemeral nature makes any copy an unusual survival. Item #406319
A wonderful trade catalog from Artek, with all furniture and interior designs by Alvar Aalto in collaboration with Aino Aalto or Maija Heikinheimo. The nine sections comprise: Bookshelves and benches; Chests of drawers and cabinets; Armchairs; Chairs and stools; Tables; and Round Tables and special tables. Quite scarce: Worldcat/OCLC lists only two copies, both in Switzerland. An outstanding resource for collectors, dealers, and scholars of modern Scandinavian furniture and interior design.
