London: Dennis Dobson, Circa 1970. 4to. Color illustrations throughout, including rear endpapers. Original glazed color-illustrated boards. Spine very lightly sunned, lower cover with small residue from sticker to upper outer corner. Item #405874
A near-fine copy of a rare early printing of Elmer, in which David McKee's endearing multi-colored elephant makes his first appearance. First published in 1968, Elmer quickly went out of print and it was not until it was republished in 1989 thatit became the international success he is today. Although the 1989 edition appears in the market quite readily, we have not traced another copy of a Dennis Dobson issue at auction. COPAC lists only one copy of the first edition (British Library), and just four copies of this early reprint (Exeter University, Oxford University, Trinity College Dublin, and the V&A). Espousing inclusivity, the story is as relevant today as when it was first published. McKee wrote and illustrated at least another 40 books about Elmer, giving rise to merchandising and a a TV series, and Elmer is now published in more than 20 languages.
