FIRST EDITION. Max von Brandt (1910-1920) was one of German's foremost diplomats in the Far East. The present text attempts to characterize Chinese customs and politics by discussing 82 news-items and their depictions in the 'Illustrated News-paper' published by the Tien-shih Studio in Shanghai between 1894-95. The selections include many of a quaintly fabulous or superstitious character while at the same time showing humor and wisdom.
