A FINE PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "To Miss Luisette Smith / Lake Placid Club / Sentiment from a sampler wrought by Frances Johnson in 1797 – / 'If any faults in this you see, / Mend them yourself, and find no fault in me.' / Gertrude Whiting September 1929." The Lake Placid Club was founded in 1895 and its development helped draw tourists to the town and Adirondacks.
