The Emigrant's Guide to the Gold Mines

Haverford, PA: Headframe Publishing Co, 1978. Prologue and epilogue by Franz R. Dykstra. 8vo. 81, [1] pp. Original morocco-backed marbled boards. Fine. Item #403821

LIMITED EDITION, number 222 of 250 copies printed by Henry Morris at the Bird & Bull Press and bound by E. G. Parrott II. "Dale Morgan wrote that this early eyewitness account was actually 'an outright fraud.' The New York Volunteers never listed Henry I. Simpson as one of its members, and most of the material was drawn from Colonel Mason's well-known report or borrowed without credit from the New York Herald of December 13, 1848. Morgan further speculated that Bithell, the holder of the copyright, may have been the creator of this curious pamphlet." The original 1848 edition is one of the rarest early gold rush guides.
