London: Chapman and Hall, 1872. 8vo. 170 pp. Original green cloth. Library stamps and pencilings, gift inscription on pastedown, wear at extremities. Item #403684
FIRST EDITION. A privately circulated journal. Its preface reminded "those to whom it is sent... not to part with [their copies] as, for obvious reasons, he would not like the book to get into the hands of those with whom he is unacquainted." The gift inscription on the pastedown directs the recipient's attention to this detail. "The author was an Englishman and his “obvious reasons” are indeed apparent on reading the book, for his criticisms are by no means always favorable to Americans" (Rosenbach 8-686: "very rare"). Howes L233; Wynar 2045.
