FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, published for the Universal Exposition at Paris, 1867. Whitney represented the Colorado Territory in its mineral exhibition, and the display of Colorado Ore was awarded a Gold Medal. The display of raw materials from the nations of the world formed the central zone of the elliptically shaped building designed to make the exhibition truly an exposition universelle. Whitney's enthusiasm was over-the-top; he writes "We find a belt of pyritous gold veins in Colorado surpassing in richness any known in the world, to which the gold fields of California bear no comparison." See Howes W-387. Wynar 2496.
