Map key inset on cover rubbed and with partial loss, affected some letters on recto and verso, pale discoloration on final leaf, corners thumbed. Item #403016

The map on the cover bears the caption: “A. Island of New-York. B. Fort at Powle’s Hook. C. Fort at Bunker-Hill. D. The Sound. E. King’s Bridge. F. Hell Gate. H. Flatbush. I. Governor’s Island. [Also, continued on the verso of the 2nd leaf] G. Fort Washington, together with the Lines of the Continental Army on the east side of North-River. K. East River. L. The Lines which guard the passage from the Sound to Kings-Bridge. N. Fort Constitution.”

The text includes Prayer by Oliver Cromwell, list of expected eclipses, monthly Jan-Dec. 1777, schedules of moon phases, tides and weather forecasts, a reprint of the “ Celebrated Speech of Galgacus” with Pro American Revolutionary commentary, a distance chart for “ Roads to the principle towns on the Continent etc. from Boston;” The last page has a list of vacations at Harvard College and a poem “ On Death” .

Advertised in the Massachusetts Spy, Worcester, Nov. 13, 1776. Two states noted. In the first, as here, the legend accompanying the map on the title page (of the defenses of New York) has the reference 'See p. 3d.' In the second state this has been corrected to read: 'See p. 4th.' Moreover, the seasonal verses at heads of calendar pages in the earlier state have been replaced in the later state with verses from Hale's "The sum of religion." Though the legend is rubbed in the present copy, it contains the original verses as in the first state.
