Inspired by Picasso's experimental woodcuts that depicted animals, Apollinaire got the idea to write a contemporary bestiary as a series of quatrains about a troop of animals. Picasso has involved in other projects, so Apollinaire commissioned Dufy, whom he had met through Derain, to collaborate with him.
