"In its time this was the most comprehensive work on operative surgery in France" (Garrison-Morton-Norman 5592, first edition in French, 1832). Velpeau was the first to attempt an operative treatment of an aneurysm and he is credited with providing the first accurate description of leukemia. A prolific author, he wrote over 340 titles on surgery, embryology, anatomy, obstetrics and more. The title refers to an atlas volume in quarto containing 22 plates, not present with this copy (the first American edition of 1835 mentioned an atlas that was never published). Complete sets are scarce, most having been dispersed. Cordasco 50-1580.
