Introduction by Elie Wiesel. 'Beyond Despair' is Aptecker's symbolic interpretation of the destruction of East European Jewry during the Holocaust. Laid-in is a typed letter signed by the publisher Philip Kahn to Isaac Bashevis Singer, forwarding him a copy of the book (the first issued by the press) and requesting Singer's comments. Stapled to Kahn's letter is a handwritten note by George Aptecker, a member of the Jewish Community Federation of Metropolitan New Jersey, reading: "It is my pleasure to send you an advance copy of 'Beyond Despair.' Your comments would be appreciated."
