FIRST EDITION ON SHAFRAN'S FIRST BOOK, self-published with support from Focal+Point Gallery, in an edition of 600 copies, all of which were hand-titled by the artist. Shafran first rose to prominence for his work in the 80s and 90s for i-D, and other style magazines. His independent artistic career has often focused on explorations of domesticity, here first seen in book form in this chronological series of images of, or relating to, his wife Ruth taken between 1992 and 1995. Shafran's work pushes against the idea of the "unremarkable" and the "every day," bringing his lens to concepts of subjectivity and objectivity, the particular and the universal. The contemporary gift inscription on the inner rear wrapper captures this spirit: "I thought you would enjoy this portrayal of a London 'Bird' – ' the beauty of stark reality.'"Parr & Badger, vol. III:261("This is a simple book, a family album or a love poem, and is very affecting. A relationship – or two and a half years of it – in fourteen pictures. Photography can do that.").
